Default Chrome Pipe Question

Ok here is the deal, I have only had my very first bike for one week today ('02 Fatboy) and I really love the sound of the pipes she has on her, but I am not a big fan of all the chrome so I am looking to darken things up a little, is there a way to keep the pipes but blacken them out? I have V&H Long Shots on here right now, and really don't want to change them if possible.

THanks in advance

You can rap them with dark heat tape for the rat bike look. (I like the look) Or I've heard of guys painting them with black barbecue grill paint. I have never seen this done, but ig you hate the look what have you got to loose. You could put some bbq paint under the heat shield where it won't show and drive it around for a few weeks and see how it looks. If you like it paint he heat shields. If you don't like how it looks you could always go the heat tape rout.

Good luck. These low cost "real" custom modification (verses just buying skull stuff) can be very rewarding.

On the 'el cheap, you can sand them and paint them with high heat rattle can paint. I have a set of drags that I did that way. They held up fine. Or, you can spend a few bucks and get them powdercoated.

I would go the VHT paint route first and if it looked OK, get them ceramic coated in black.
I'm not much of a fan of powdercoating pipes, a little too much heat and they can turn gray or flake off. Ceramic coatings are a bit more expensive, but where heat is conserned the coating is virtually indestructable. It also helps to keep the heat inside the pipes where it belongs so you don't feel as much outside.

Take the heat shields off and have them ceramic coated black. It will last a lot longer than rattle can paint, you wont have to change or even remove your pipes and you will get the dark look your looking for.

Anywhere from $15-25 a foot depending on what you want and who does it.

When I was thinking of putting on slipon mufflers I got a quote for about $90 to do the stock pipes (inside and out) in black.
