You wont loose any primary fluid if the bike is stright up (not on the jiffy stand) or leaned to the right. The bottom of the Derby Cover opening is where the fill level is in the primary

Got a T27 Torx? Also, be sure to use star pattern when tightening screws.

Did your new cover come with a gasket? It may or may not need one. You are suppose to change the gasket anytime you remove the cover, but a lot of the time it is not necessary, if the old gasket is intact.
Make sure you use a #27 Torx bit to remove the bolts. A #25 Torx bit will feel like it is the right one, but will just round our the bolt heads.

Your '08 uses a keyed O-ring like shown on the right (below). Most aftermarket covers (including many of the H-D ones) use the old-style gasket like shown on the left. Check which you need before you start the job!

Now that is weird because my '02 softail standard came with thethe one on the right and after about a year stealership said HD changed it to the one on the left they said they had problems with the "O" ring style so they changed over.

If you buy a new derby cover the gasket is not included. Big surprise. You'll have to buy the one on the left. The one on the right won't work.
