Yeah you definitley need to get a lift i struggled with the same issue due to mine being so low to the ground. The money you spend on a lift will be well worth the time and frustration....good luck! Also you need to clean the area extremely well if you get that thing cross threaded theres just about no turning back.

There have been other complaints about taking out or replacing the transmission plug.
My bike is a 2005 SE Fat Boy. I have a jack, but didn't bother to use it for the engine oil or transmission fluid change. Figured it would just be in the way. Didn't have any problems removing or replacing the plug and my bike sits an 1" lower then stock. Did you put the drain plug in the 5/8" socket and use a short extension, to start it, then snap on the ratchet?
Maybe the new 6 speed transmissions have the drain plug hole a bit off center, common to the shocks placement.

If so you got about two or three options, find a tap that fits the stock hole size and try to run it through and try to clean the treads out. Buy a new pan. Or find a bigger plug drill and tap your pan to fit larger plug.

I used a hex head to start the bolt is 5/8 and in the center is hex! I am going to take a mirror and try to see if the threads are screwed up I dont think they are.

I think I am going to use a 75-90 to the 20w50 seems a little light weight for the tranny That is if I ever get the drain plug back in.

These things can get nasty. Aluminum plug in an aluminum case. Sometimes the two try to stick together. At the first sign of not being able to spin the plug in with basic finger pressure, put a little grease on a tap and run it up in there to clean the thread of the case. Run a die on the plug to remove any burrs as well. It can get really ugly fast if you start forcing things. I believe they are 1/2" fine thread.
