Default Do I need a new ECM

Getting an 09 Fatbob: V&H Big Radius pipes and a Stage 1 installed. Does anything need to be done to the fuel control module? The dealer is telling us that we need to pop $400.00 for a new "compatible" one. I thought maybe the factory unit could just be re-mapped if needed.
Thanks for any help.

I thought for just air filter and pipes you could get a download to the stock ecu. Anything more and then something like a SERT is needed.
I am not positive so consider this a bump!

You could get either a Fuelpak (around $250) or a Power Commander (around $320) in case you ever decide to change your pipes or A/C in the future, then you could do the remapping yourself.

It will run better with a power commander and a dyno tune, but it is not necessary. You could jsut get the factory downlaod (used to be $150). A million different answers to this question.

the $400 the dealer is talking about must be the sert. if it is stage 1 then it includes an air breather upgrade also.

I'm going to jump out on a limb and say I hope you either misunderstood what they said or he just misstated something. Cause there is only one ECM and if he really is trying to sell you another one it sounds like an expensive rip off.
My guess is that what he was trying to do is sell you a SERT that they will install and download the standard stage 1 MAP. $400 would be to cover the parts (SERT) and labor (install time). Because once you install a SERT on a bike its a permanent serial number type marriage and it can't be used on another bike.
They should be able to do a stage 1 download for about $150 like anubisss said, but I'm thinking there is more profit in selling you the SERT. And its really not a bad idea if you have any plans to do future internal engine upgrades.
Once you have the SERT it will allow you to modify and install new MAP's as you change parts to keep things running properly.
If your just doing the stage 1 without any future plans for the engine. Then you have the option of going for the download or any of the other aftermarket options available like the PC III or V, Thundermax, Fuelpac, etc.
The download is the cheapest way out with something like a Thundermax w/Autotune at the other end of the cost scale at nearly $1000.
Do a search on here on the subject of MAP's and ECM's and it should keep you busy reading for a month. But you'll be much better informed about what's available as well as the ups and downs of each option.

Thanks. The info people are willing to share here is why I joined this forum. Otherwise, I'm pretty much at the mercy of the dealer.
