I put a 16" front wheel from a Fatboy onto my Softail Standard, I'm fender shopping too. There's a place on ebay that sells new unpainted steel fenders for $72.99 free shipping. Search "Fat Boy front fender". I'm still looking for a take-off so as I don't have to get it painted, but the new steel wouldn't be the worst option. I have time yet, since I live on the frozen tundra and won't be riding again until April.
May be a stupid question but has anyone left the old fender on when going to 16 or 17 and if anyone has the original fender and a smaller tire would they mind mocking it up and posting or pming me photos?
I would like to eventually put a smaller front tire on my bike but if it is the paint or the tire the paint will win.
They guys at the local shop left the original fender on for the mock-up of the heritage wheel. Looked like my tire had a mohawk on it with that fender sitting high and way narrow.
I used that Ness fender on mine, but I don't have any pics of it. I trimmed that thing down to almost nothing- kind of like the Exile fender (that Russell wants $400 for!). I swap between my Fatboy, my 'cafe racer' (the Ness) and another longer aftermarket fender- keeps people guessing! I also swap seats between 3 different ones, take my bags off, etc. That's why I call mine the "Mystery Train"- no one can figure out what it is!
Here's a pic with the Fatboy fenders...
And with the (unknown brand) other custom fender...
