I have an 04 Night Train. I'm finally getting around to the stage 1 kit and exhaust mod. I talked to a couple different dealers about what I have to do pipe-wise when I make the change. One dealer says they want to remove the baffels from my stock pipes (drill them I guess)when they do the stage 1, and that it will make the bike sound really mean and throaty. The other dealer says there is no way to make the stock pipes work and that I HAVE to buy new pipes or it will sound like crap. Obviously conflicting information. So which is right? Can stock pipes be drilled out? And if so how will it sound after?
I have to agree with your dealer. Drilling the factory pipes will probably work to get exhaust flow, but they will probably not sound good. I drilled a set on a 97 Lowrider, and the power was okay, and the mixture right, but the pipes sounded like crap. I have heard several other bikes that have had the pipes drilled, and none have sounded very good.
The dealer wants to drill the baffels. I guess I'm going to have to find a bike that they have done it to so I can hear for myself. Just seems strange that two dealers tell me such opposite things.

I was looking to do the stage 1 on my 05 Deuce. I was told by two different dealers that it would be better to replace the stock pipes with either a full sysem or slip ons. While it would be cheaper to leave the stock pipes in place I would not get as good performance or sound. I am going to get the pipes myself and then take my bike in for the kit. I figure I would save a few pennies that way.
I have a 05 Softail with SE2 slip ons on it, and my Dad has a 04 Dyna WideGlide with stock mufflers and the baffles removed. Both are EFI's. The SE2's have a much deeper sound to them, and personally I think they look better. The stockers drilled out, are not bad sounding, but just not quite a good as the SE's.
I'll go with jeffd on this one. A buddy of mine drilled his out and it sounded good but not as good as with the screamin eagle II slip- ons (a much deeper rumble with the S.E.II)
But hey, if your strapped for cash or just want to try drilling out the O.E. pipes go ahead and try that. Chances are your never going to need or want your originals, mine have been sitting in the garage corner for 5 years now.
