Default Pin Insertion Tool?

I'll be replacing the speed pickup on my 03 FB. I couldn't remove the old one because of the tight space the connector has to go through so I'll probably cut it out.

I found a replacement that doesn't have the connector installed.

What tool do I need to crimp the pins and insert them into the connector? Can I get away with needle nose pliers or is there something specific to the task?

Radio shack sells the pin removal tool. There are several brands/types, but I like this one the best: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062447

You don't need a tool to insert the pins into the connector block, just push them in and they lock. The above tool compresses the lock tabs and allows you to remove the pins/wires with cutting them off.

You really DO need the special type crimpers to do a decent job. Radio shack sells the correct "type" but they are too small for that size connector. Napa has the right ones for about 40.00 Kent-Moore makes a nice one that will crimp both the electrical connection and wire insutation at the same time, but really expensive.

Look closely at the jaws in the pic. That is basically what you want. They "roll" the ears on the pins around and into the wire and keep everything "round" like it has to be.

get a good pair, if the crimp is bad the pin may not fit in the plug.

Get a jewelers or eyeglass repair kit with the small screwdriver for pin removal. Works great and alot cheaper

Even a small paper clip will remove pins. I did both hand control connectors when a installed new bars with internal wiring. Unfortunatley, what;'s being said about crimper tool true. You can try using a needle nose to bend over tabs and solder, but if not done correctly, will be a bitch to install into connector. I was fortunate enough to a have access to the correct crimp tool... good luck

Just make sure you know where each wire goes. I drew a diagram on a pizza box that was color coded.

Thanks for the advice all. I'll get the right tool and not use needle nose. Radio Shack doesn't seem to have that tool on their website now but I think I know what to look for from the picture. I'll do a little hunting around. I thought I might find it on J&P or DK but no luck.

I'll be sure to order another pizza just before I pull the old connector.

I misread t150vej's post. It looks like the removal tool is included. That green thing looks something like what I found at LADD Industries for pin removal:

I found the following on DK for around $15. If this is the right tool I may just order it if I can't find it locally.

If I am not mistaking those are amp connectors. You can actually use standard crimpers but remember that there are 2 crimp points on them, one crimps to the bare wire and the upper section crimps to the wire shield. A few months ago when I did my turn signals I cut them to length then the dealer crimped them, hard to believe but they did not charge me anything, probally because I spend over 3k there 2 months prior.

Im trying to remove 3 pins from my my main wire harness going to the tail to install an aux break light. Ive read and tried all the previous as well as this thread (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/arti...onnectors.html) and nothing is working. Ive broke 2 of the 3 wires, so I need to get new pins from HD anyway but I still need the broke pins removed from the plug b/c the aux light has to be re pluged back into the main harness. any other advice? THX
