Default Seat options for Softail Custom

I like my stock seat. It's real comfortable. However, my young son (10 years old) likes to ride on the back. The problem is the back rest on the stock seat is way too low to keep him in place in case "something happens" (mom's quote). So, anybody have any thoughts (preferrably with pictures) on options that I have to replace or augment my current seat/back rest problem?

Corbin makes a replacement seat for our bikes that appear to come up higher then the stock one (covers the entire top of the sissy bar). Maybe that would be high enough?

You're right, if you want to keep a king/queen seat on this bike there aren't a lot of options. jlevin's link is a good way to go. I have that Corbin seat on my FXSTC with the stock sissy bar and it's excellent. My wife wanted more back support than stock and she's happy now. With the Corbin you'll sit about an inch lower and farther back, and of course it's a Corbin so it will feel firm. It's leather and you can add a removable driver's backrest as well. Here is a pic or two.

snowmass,

1. Does the seat back give the passenger a lot more "secured feeling"?

2. You said firm...How comfortable is it on an all day ride?

3. Is the driver's back rest an option? I s it easy to add and remove?

Thanks for your assistnace.

turcz, I'd say it adds about 4" height, and my wife says it now gives her the back support she wanted. She doesn't need much, she's 5' 6", 108 lbs. I'd think a bigger person would want more. And yes, the seat is firm. But I'm as comfortable on it as I was on the stock after all day. But I bought a gel pad for my wife - the Corbin has to break in to be really comfortable and she just doesn't do enough time on there. Poke around the Corbin website and read about their construction. And read some other Corbin owner remarks. It seemed to me that almost all owners loved them especially for long rides, but there were a few who just didn't like the firmness.

All these Corbin seats come built to accept the driver backrest unless you ask them not to put that in. Once you get the thing you see that there is quite a bit of hardware inside there, springs, etc. that support and operate the optional backrest. You buy the backrest separately and it is held in with a single hex head bolt that removes from the top (push it forward and the bolt is at the back of the base) - no need to remove the seat to remove/install your backrest. The backrest folds forward on a spring for the passenger to get on easier, and is adjustable fore/aft and for angle as well, so you'll be able to get it just right.

One last thing. Corbin custom makes all seats, and it doesn't cost more for them to make it up however you want it. I got matching blue stitching and ostrich leather insert. Quality of workmanship is outstanding. Hey, and you're buying American!

Bottom line is that I do wish the passenger backrest was even higher, and I wish I didn't have to break in the closed-cell foam. But it is what it is, and with the workmanship, the leather, the driver backrest, and the cool look, I'd do it again.
