My wife just got an '07 Deluxe and wants to put some bags on it for short touring. We both agree that the stock options are too small and look doofy. She would like a set of heritage bags but I don't know if they would work with the exhaust set-up the Deluxes have. What have you who own FLSTN models done around this issue?
The stock Deluxe bags may look smaller than the Heritage bags but they're much more useful imo. They open up from the back and have a wide opening which allows full view of the insides. Plus they have a lock and are hardsided.
Heritage bags suck for utility. We have both a Heritage and Deluxe, both with stock bags.
I noticed in the new MoCo Catalog that they have a new hardsided leather bag for softails. Far as I can tell it fits the FLSTN. Part No 53061-00B. May be worth a look and it would match much better than the studded Heritage bag. Personally we like the tradional weave look better on the Deluxe.
Edit: I'm not sure but I think there are a couple sizing problems with putting the Heritage bags on a Deluxe. One is the pipes and the other is interference with the tailights.
I like the doofy stock hard bags....they lock and blend with the bike. They are a little on the small side but they work fine for me. I also plan on getting the matching tour pack as well....
I put these on the wifes Deluxe. They Look GREAT, and have held up beautifully for 3 years now. Good heavy leather, easy brakets for quick removal or adding them, and because you set the braket, you can set it to be whatever height you wish. I placed a 2x4 on top of the pipes and installed the bag on to of that. that gave me the clearance I needed to avoid a heat issue.
Don't get the small HD bags. Friend put them on his wifes bike, took a huge loss selling them the next year cause she could not carry anything in them. Way too small to be useful. He bought the Boss bgs to replace them. Also, the stock bags have in the past been known to have a leak issue due to the way they close. Unless that has been changed, you'll get everythjing wet whenever it rains on your rides. he could put his fingers into the bag from the back while locked...water poured in.
here is a pic of the wifes on her bike, before we went and changed everything (pipes, Paint etc..)

There are other options out there. Check out the bags specifically made for the Deluxe by Hogdeluxe. He used to post here often. I don't have them myself (I sold the Deluxe stock bags and use Springer bags) but the talk was they were of high quality.
