i have a rocker and a fatboy and i love them both as others have said the rocker is not a good touring bike but great for runs around town. The fatboy you can add bags and windshield and is a nice touring bike
I've not ridden the Road King but I do like the looks. I have ridden a couple of the touring bikes from Harley and personally, I prefer the balanced engine of the Fat Boy over the rubber mounted engines of the touring machines.
The main difference I found between the two is when idling. You definitely feel the engine vibrating under you and can see it in the mirrors on the touring bikes. On the Fat Boy, you can still feel the power but during idle. At speed, both engine configs feel great.
I have the Fat boy as my first bike. I put windsheild and instead of saddle bags I went with a back pack bag that mounts on the luggage rack. Lots of touring with my Wife and in my opinion it looks cooler than saddle bags. I did consider the Heritage but I liked the bigger tire on the Fatty.
I started on a 1200 Sporty myself and have owned a 2000 Dyna Lowrider, 99 RK Classic and a 08 Rocker. The RK and Rocker are my current rides. If you plan on touring I'd say def go with the RK. Its fun around town but also a great touring bike. I love my Rocker and its better than I thought on a medium length ride but a Touring bike is the way to go if your riding any real distances. A Fat Boy is a Softail so it is limited in that capacity. If you want a Fat Boy but would be adding bags and a shield why bother - they already make that - just buy a Heritage. But remember, either way its still a softail so you'll always be giving up ride quality for the look.
I came from a wideglide to a Fatboy. Its a pretty versital bike. I leave it stripped down and can put my rack on and luggage bag and off for a short haul. RK is nice too. Your going to have to stare at them both till you see in your mind what you want.
I like the fatboy for the same reasons above. the ability to remove everything and cruse around town, or put on a few things and take a trip. the RK is nice look too but not my look.
