Ape Hanger Install...
Just ordered 14" gangsta apes for my train and i am determind to do the install myself...I'm mechanically inclined and have read as much as i can on this topic but would like to know if anyone here has any words of wisdom or "dont forget to's" when im putting everything together...
Also if anyone know's of a good reference site with step by step stuff that might be helpfull too!

Put a piece of cardboard behind your brake lever BEFORE you take the switch housings off. You could break the switch if you don't. Have extra brass ferrules for the throttle cables on hand in case you drop them. Check out this thread for the rest. Granted this is on a road king, most of it is the same.

Feel free to shoot me any questions bro, i just did the 14" flyin apes on mine and learned along the way. It really is a straight forward job though. I'm north of Dallas by about 40 miles, I wouldn't mind giving you a hand if you need it!
i'd recommend the H-D repair manual too. i used mine quite a bit during my install, plus it will always come in handy down the road too!
otherwise, if you're mechaniclly inclined, its a piece of toast you'll have no problems you can't figure out
good luck

Have to admit that I had my dealer put mine on while it was in the shop for other stuff, so I can't offer any actual "been there, done that" advice.
But as an FYI, here are a couple things that happened on mine...
- my dealer did recommend, like some of these other guys, going with some urethane bushings w/ the apes... said the original rubber ones would wear out in no time w/ the tall bars.
- Also FYI, my dealer budgeted about 4 hours for the bars exchange... that being by someone who's built custom bikes and got all the tools and done it before.
- Last, they ordered custom length cables after the bars were already on, so they could measure things up and get just the right length. Took about an extra week to wait for the custom lines to come in.
Anyway, just some general considerations for ya.

thanks guys! Ill post up pics of the progress i'm sure it'll take me some time....the best thing i have going for me i think is that when i had the whiskey bars put on i dropped all my controls and hid my ignition switch so no wiring needed for this guy!
dusty i might just give you shout once i get into it, they said the bars would ship today and i should see them next week gonna do a mock up and measure out my new lines
