Default Air Cleaner Trim Cover/Exposed Filter Element

So I walk into the local HD dealership yesterday and ask about buying another football air cleaner with the thought of cutting/trimming it down and running an open filter with just the modified cover as some have done with Dyno's. The guy at the parts counter asks why cut it down? He suggests just buying a trim cover like the one pictured below and just mounting it on the K&N filter already installed on my bike and just tossing the football cover.

Not that I'm being skeptical that it would work, and he did offer to try and see if it would work if I brought the bike down. But I'm wondering if anyone here has done this? Just looking at the trim cover in the package, it appears that the phillips head bolt that comes with the trim cover wouldn't be long enough, based on the the length of the one used with the football cover.

Opinions?

i have seen it done. if the new screw is too short, just use the original one form the football cover or buy a longer one. no big deal. good luck

Yea it'll work. Here is one I modded for the nighttrain. Pretty sure I used a different bolt, but I don't remember the length.

That is all I run on my bike. I took a beat up derby cover, chucked it up in the lathe and cut it so size! I removed the chrome, left the copper and left it to fade/turn.

Did the same thing, an old wrinkle black air cleaner from e-bay.
Cut it down to size on the lathe.
