My advice would be to buy the bike you really want to begin with. If you don't, you will be continually adding chrome parts along the way at a greater cost. Better yet, find a Softail that is a year or two old that has the stage one performance upgrades, and a bundle of chrome already installed. There are plenty of recent, low mileage bikes being sold by private parties.

Go for it. It's super easy and you don't need a service manual to change the covers. I have an 08 rocker and just chromed all my covers tranny, primary ext.In total 7 pieces, and had my oil tank polished. Cost $500 and a tube of lock tight. Took a couple hrs to remove and a couple to put back. Well worth the investment. I too wanted more chrome but couldn't pass up on this deal. So I got the plain rocker instead. HIt me up if u need any help.

how cheap is cheap? a bike dealer would have checked it over to be sure it was safe and maybe give a short warranty. be sure if you are going to buy it that you get it inspected by a bike dealer first. I would hate to see you get it then have a $3000 repair or worse yet get hurt on it

Buy the bike. Get a service manually. And have fun putting all that chrome on yourself. you can do most of it and I mean most probably all of it if you can read the manual and understand it. Self explanatory. Go slow and have fun because once you start putting it on, there's no stopping now. Go for it and good luck and safe riding...Ray

The biggest chrome piece you can add will be the front lowers and maybe the dealer can throw in a deal on them for you. The rest can be handled with time and patience.

All you're going to need to chrome that bike up is:
1. motorcycle jack
2. sevice manual
3. torque wrench
4. Loctite

Oh, and an ebay account. I got a new service manual for $30 on ebay, and most of my chrome came from there, also.

The bike in the picture below is my Wifes 2006 Softail.

ALL of the modifications were done by ME, other than the actual paint. I have never wrenched on a bike before that, and found that I really enjoy it.

Go for it, You CAN do it easy. Get the manual, and you are set.
