Default derby cover change

Im wanting to change my derby cover to the black finned, i know you have to get a new seal, so my question is this, is the stock primary like an open belt system that is dry or will fluid gush out everywhere when i pull the derby cover off...my guess is no it wont, but a confirmation will give me some reasurance

It shouldn't come out if filled at the proper level. But to be on the safe side. Try to
have the bike a little more straight up.

No, it will not gush out. The fluid pools in the bottom of the case. Make sure your bike is upright and not leaning prior to pulling the cover or some will definetely run out.

Put the bike upright and put an oil pan underneath just in case. Also while you have everything apart you may as well change the primary oil. You can reuse the same gasket as well.

I just changed mine on sunday. If the bike is sitting up right, no fluid will leak out, you're good to go!

However, you will need a new gasket. The stocker is a ring that fits into the stock derby cover. The new one will need a plate looking gasket.

if it were a '73 Pontiac - maybe I'd reuse a gasket.... I would never reuse a gasket on anything I cared about. what's a few dollars for the peace of mind a new gasket will bring?

i would replace the stock gasket. the new ones you can reuse, they have red writing on the inside of them. and no oil isn't going to come running out all over. i love my fin cover

You can't reuse the o-ring gasket anyway. It's not made to be used with the aftermarket covers as there is no groove for it in them. You have to use the cork/cardboard looking one and be sure the painted-on seal faces the right direction. It's says right on it which way it should face.

Had a buddy hold the bike straight up when I changed it. No fluid leaked.
