shifter play on fxsts
I have a 1998 fxsts that has a lot of shifter play. I was told that the primary would have to come off to replace the spline. Anybody have any experience with this kind of thing?

If the allen screw is tight on the shifter lever and you still have a lot of play, then yes the outer and inner primary cover will have to come off. I have done it several times on Road Kings and it's not that hard if you have the service manual. What you can try doing is grind off a couple teeth from the lever so it clamps around the spline of the shifter shaft tighter. Also remember the position of the lever before you remove it, so it is in the correct position when you assemble it.
