Default Fatboy versus Superglide custom

I am looking at purchasing my first Harley. I have had metric bikes for many years but I have always wanted a Harley. Now I have the funds to do so.

I have been looking at the superglide custom and the fatboy. Both are beautiful bikes. I am 5'8" and the SGC fits me real well. I found the seat on some of the FB to be a little to wide. I know I can change the seat out.

For the price of the SGC I could afford to customize it some right away. ( Rhinehart exhaust, race tuner, stage 1 and rims). The fatboy I would keep pretty much stock except for some slip on Rush mufflers.

I don't do long trips, I ride to work once in awhile, poker runs, bike nights and the typical weekend riding. I have my girlfriend on the back 75% of the time.

Just curious what some of your opinions are on the two bikes.

Thanks Bob

P.S I also posted this in the Dyna section.

I really like the way the Dyna's handle. The Fat Bob and the Street Bob I rode both did everything exceptionally well.

Something about that softail and all its inherent possibilities and available trinketry makes it hard to resist.

Ride em' both. 75% girlfriend on the back is an issue that may sway me towards Fatboy. Little bit more room for her to lounge and get comfy!

Why a brand spanking new one?

You can buy 1-2-3 year old bikes dirt cheap everywhere right now.

After tallying up the price of several new bikes at my local dealership I saved mucho coin and just bought an old one from a fellow HDF member.

All those RUB's (Rich Urban Bikers) that jumped on the Harley bandwagon are now selling off the bikes in droves. 1000 mile 3-4 year old bikes are not uncommon. Matter of fact they are common!

I see 08's on E-Bay everyday with basic stage 1 upgrades and 400 miles selling for 5-6 grand less than the identicle bike still sitting in the showroom.

Nothing against a RUB....I love em' they always have lots of cheap parts and bikes for sale that are paid for!!

that would be a lot funnier if it was not so true!

I agree.... with looking at the used market ...

HD is also big on demo rides right now.... not sure what bike your coming from but I would try an ride both of them before you make the decision...

A used bike isn't out of the question. I would want an 07 or 08. Something with the fuel injection and a 6 speed.

I have had a suzuki maurader (800 cc) and the 1100 Yamaha midnight special.

Those are nice bikes for what they are, but time to move from the pinto to the cadillac. I'm sure you'll make the right choice, whatever it may be. Good luck!

Take a look at this guys feedback and what he has been selling late model bikes for.http://feedback.ebay.com/ebaymotors/...k&myworld=true

He is slinging sweet iron down the road everyday without any reserve on his auctions. He buys clean repo'd bikes.

Look at this sweet *** deal a guy got from him:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=150334684175

Or this 2000 mile 06' Fatboy for 12K:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=150324652138

Those are bikes that set the original owners back 20 grand. They both did 12K. Thats the direction I would be going were I in the market!!

Oh yeah...Dyna's?

Heres one that brought 7 grand....
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=130285776312

I think a guy could send a guy like him a message telling him exactly what he was looking for and have it in his garage cheaper than anyone in the country within a week or two.

I dont even know the guy....But next time I'm in the market I sure as hell will!!

I don't know about you...but when I look at something I can see what I need to do to improve it....make it mine...
when I was looking I had to make the decision between a Rock and an XB...
the dealer had both so I just walked around both of them throwing ideas through my head... the XB won...

IMO you are going to like the Dyna better...
it handles better....and will feel lighter when riding it...
your going to want to do at least a stage one right out of the gate also....

I think the best thing for me to do is rent one of each and see which one I like better.

I was at Southeast Harley Davidson today talking to a salesman and I was told that part of the new stimulas bill you can right off the sales tax on a new Harley when you files taxes for 2009.

Another question I can't get a straight answer on from the dealers is: If I want to change the mufflers on a bike what else do I need to do? Every dealer I asked gives me a different answer. Some say I can add mufflers and do nothing else. Some say it needs to be retuned. Some say definately need stage 1, A/C nad raace tuner. Any input?

Thanks
Bob

Pipes or A/C only do not need anything. Pipes and A/C you need a tune of some sort - dealer download for stage 1, or Power Commander or...

Like everyone said, get a used late model - 07, 08 or 09

Look at this deal:

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/mcy/1127653421.html

Tempted to sell the 06 for that one!
