Default Hi, 99 FXSTC Purchase Question

Howdy,

I'm getting back into bikes after 30 years, rode dirt bikes in the 70's and had a Triumph for awhile. Now it's time for a real bike and I'm on a budget so I'm looking @ used.

My neighbor has a 99 Soft Tail Custom (14k miles) that has been rode hard and put up wet, and put down on it's right side-no real damage but the hypo charger and pipes still show road rash. It's been stored on his porch or outside, paint looks OK and the chrome comes back with effort, aluminum is oxidized. I've been riding it for a week and it does not smoke/leak, clutch is ok and it seems to shift fine. Maintenance has not been great, oil dark, aircleaner filthy, needs tires, brakes, throttle(veryloose and slow), looks like things got fixed as they broke and nothing more.

So...I know this is a tough question but what is it worth, Cash price with folding money. I've been looking online but all the bikes I've seen have been in real good shape with lots of mods so it's a little hard to compare. I can and will do all the work myself.

Thanks
Doug

BTW; I really like the bike, very comfortable for me, and fast enough..I'm an old guy ya know!!!

Default Custom

The value of that bike in good condition is about $8200, but from the description your giving it sounds like you might be able cut that number in half, at least!

I just bought a 1998 Softail Custom last year from my local Harley dealer with 10,000 miles, it very good condition and all kinds of extras on it for $8,000. I have already put $3000 dollars into the bike over one year to get it where I want it.

I would offer no more than $4500.

Best of luck

My wife has a 98 Softail with gobs of goodies. 15,000 miles and perfect maintance records. She's lucky to get $7000.00 in this market. Offer $4500.00 at best.

Double that and you can find some real nice older bikes.

If the bike was perfect, $8K. In the condition you state, anything over $5.5-6K probably is not worth it. You can find bikes in that age range for good prices very easily. The majority of buyers would pass due to age and cosmetics. If bought for the right price, it would make an excellent starting point for customization.

Thanks,

I was leaning towards 4K myself, he says he has a bunch of new parts so maybe a little more, we'll talk this weekend. He has not been using it much the last few years and has been talking about not riding anymore, and then he says he wants something new. We'll see and I'll let you know.

If these bikes can be had for 8K or so, where should I look? (Online) and/or I'm in NJ. I looked through Ebay for awhile but most seem to be 10K+ with a bunch of mods. Stopped by a Dealer today and he only had an 07 and wanted 16K for it. If I can find a nice one for 7-8K I'll make this guy an offer and if not, I'll move on.

Doug
