I know. He was asking about limiting factors, so I was pointing out that even though there is a difference, depending on his riding style it may not even be a factor to consider, and that the 96 runs hotter in stock form than the 88.

Oh darn it. I thought this thread was going to have something to do with ramps, and cars or busses, in front of a big crowd, after drinking lots of spirits. You know...One of those....."Hey!!!!! WATCH THIS YA"LL! Sort of things.

If it's a good deal go for it. Who cares if it's a new bike. I have several friends that have bikes like you're looking at and they are happy with them. But if the sort that always has to have the latest and greatest......Buy new.

I've got 55K miles on my 05 Deluxe and she still runs strong.

I'll say that 15 is way too much too. He needs to come down substantially. I just picked up an 07 Heritage with 2k on the odo for 15,800 otd. I didn't know for sure if I was going to like Black Cherry either but once you see it in the sun it's love. Almost better than black.

An 88 can be changed to a 95" and a 96" can be changed to a 103" without splitting the cases.

That being said pre 07 bikes can be upgraded to the new tensioner system if you really felt that is a limiting factor as well as upgraded engine size wise to a 95".

You didn't mention the price on the 05 Deluxe but if it turns out to be a really good deal why pass it up unless money is not an issue.

Hope some of my rambling helps...

I thought thought the valve train geometry was different, no ?

Thumbs up

I just traded up from an '05 1200 Custom to an 06 Deluxe and it took me about 2 seconds on my new scoot to realize I made the right choice. If you're worried about the 88''/5 speed being underpowered, it really isn't. It won't be as nimble as the 883 obviously, but it really isn't too much of an issue. I actually went to the dealer with the intentions of dealing on an 07 Fat Boy in Black Cherry, but she was sold when I got there. The Deluxe had just come in and wasn't even on the showroom floor yet, but I'm so happy with it so far. Black cherry is a sweet color and as long as you can remind the dealer that he has to move product (sometimes a rare feat these days) it shouldn't be much of a problem to talk him down and make sure he throws in a free T-shirt.

Do you guys think I would be better off selling the sporty on my own, or trading it into the dealer.

I'm aware that I wouldn't get as much from a trade as I would straight-selling it, but I'm wondering if having a trade would hurt my ability to negotiate a better deal. I know from experience with car dealers that they try to make it seem like they're already "helping you out" by taking in your trade.

If you own the Sportster then it would be good equity for a trade in. Get the blue book value online and don't take a dime less. It's typically a lot easier for the dealer to move a Sportster then a Big Twin. He might rather have the 883 on his floor than the Deluxe. My $.02

Smile 88

88TC with 5 speed is fine, and they run really well with 95 build and gear drive cams.
Enjoy.
