Default Might make the jump...

Hi All -

I've been wondering for a while if I should make the jump to a Deluxe, up from my current '01 Sportster 883.

I'm currently looking at a used 2005 FLSTN-I in Black Cherry Pearl w/ around 3.5k miles on it. The bike is totally stock (which is something I prefer, so I can do my own wrenching).

I do have some questions though, before I go and lay down some cash...

1) Is there any limiting factor between the 05/06 88ci and the 07-09 96ci. Now, I've read tons of 88 vs. 96 threads already, so I'm not looking for the obvious factors about the 6spd, and that the 96 is bigger, etc... Just stuff in terms of mechanical issues, longevity (is it too outdated?; is it worth it? will harley release a 16xx for 2010 that would make me feel like I bought old hat).

2) The color. I'm not 100% on the Black Cherry Pearl, and if I could have my pick, I'd go with the Gray w/ Burgundy pin stripe. But seeing as how I'm searching amidst used scoots, the color can't really be a deciding factor. Do you guys think it would be worth it to paint down the line if the Black Cherry didn't grow on me.

3) Last but not least, is the purchase worth it in general, or should I hold out for a newer bike?

Thanks!

Here is my take on it:

There will always be something bigger and better in terms of year changes. 88/96 are both Twin Cams with not too much difference in stock power. The major differences starting in 07 (06 Dynas) are the Cam Chain Tensioners and the addition of 02 sensors. An 88 can be changed to a 95" and a 96" can be changed to a 103" without splitting the cases.

That being said pre 07 bikes can be upgraded to the new tensioner system if you really felt that is a limiting factor as well as upgraded engine size wise to a 95".

You didn't mention the price on the 05 Deluxe but if it turns out to be a really good deal why pass it up unless money is not an issue.

Hope some of my rambling helps...

Woops... the Deluxe I'm looking at is 15k even.

Compared to what I've seen on eBay and on craigslist, it seems to be in the right place, considering the low miles.

I did see another '05 sell for $12,900 w/ lots of extras on it, but it had 18k miles.

+1 It's too much to pay. I just got an '08 with 700 miles on it for about $16400 plus tax. It has about $3500 in extras on it too.

15k is what it's listed at, but I figured I'd try to talk them down some.

What do you guys think would be reasonable OTD?

$13.5 -14k, out the door would probably be about right.

The 96 runs pretty hot in stock form. You'd be best off putting on a PC or TMax to help that out.

The 6 speed is pretty nice, but I have rarely needed the last gear, so far. It would come in handy if I spent a lot of time on the freeway at 70+, but I don't.

Color shouldn't matter if the price is right, but I'd use my dislike of it during negotiations to try to get them down some. If it's a dealer they should be able to get it painted a single color for around $600.

It's a 2005....no 96 or 6 speed.

I don't think I'd end up getting into the 6th gear very frequently anyway. So that's not a selling point for me.

I rarely take my bike on the highway because I mostly prefer to take the scenic route.
