My New Apes
Well, mini apes that is. I'm 5'6" on a good day, so I couldn't go too tall. Plus I was trying to find a riser/ape combination that would maximize the pull back for my short arms. Priority 1 was to run the wires internally, priority 2 was to increase the pull back compared to the stock bars and 3 was the cool factor.
Bars are Wild1 Chubby mini 10" apes. Chrome 2.5" pull back risers from JP Cycles and all the rest is from Chicago HD with a 20% discount. Since I had to disassemble everything, I decided to go with chrome switch housings, master cylinder, clutch perch and levers, the works
This is one heck of a time consuming job. Not hard, just time consuming.
Friday night: drain tranny oil, empty gas tank, take tank off, take exhaust off.

Saturday: by Saturday night, I have the new risers on, the throttle side all changed out and routed in the bars.

Sunday: by Sunday night, I have the clutch side all changed out and routed in the bars and the bars mounted.

During the week, I only have 2-3 hours to work on the bike.
Monday: decided before I go any further, I better make sure all the electronics work. Sure enough, all works except the right turn signals. CRAP. Spent a hour and traced the issue down to one of the Deutsch pins slipped out of the housing. Corrected that and everything worked. YES!
Tuesday: spent most of the night messing with the stupid Deadly Grip glue Kuryakyn ships with their ISO grips. Finally just used rubber cement. Wasted night. Don't use their glue, it sets up too fast.
Wednesday: Installed new throttle/idle cables, adjusted cables, installed air breather with a new chrome SE AC back plate, installed brake lines.

Thursday: Came home a little early, installed new clutch cable, adjusted cable and bled brakes with the Mighty Vac. When bleeding brakes, don't forget to remove the 5/32 piece of cardboard you've had in the brake lever for 5 days!
Friday: Couldn't stand it, left work about 3pm, filled tranny, installed exhaust with new gaskets, put tank on, made sure electronics still worked, put gas into the tank and fired it up and went for a ride. Of course I had to stop by my buddies house and show of the bars. Total cost of parts was $1140. Total cost of labor ZIPPO!

And now you understand why dealers charge so much to swap bars and such. It's not difficult, just a lot of work. Looks good. Just so you know, I am 5'9" and have 16" apes no problem. Bought the bike with 14"'s and thought that they were too tall, and rode a friends bike with 18"'s a few weeks later. Ordered up 16"'s the next day.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.
