The brake lever shim is to keep pressure off the brake switch in the switch housing so that you don’t accidentally bust the switch.

Looks great! I'm in the middle of doing the same thing on my Rocker C, but doing 16" ones instead. Like you, it's hard to be patient when the weather is getting better and better!

My guess is that you’re right, that I will quickly get use to the apes and will want taller bars. That thought has already occurred to me. But crap, I’d have to do this job all over again. I probably have an extra 2 inches in the clutch and throttle cables, but then I’ve have to extend the wiring harness again. Yuck. And I have to admit, I’d be a little concern of getting stung if my arm pits were flapping in the wind. I like to wear tank tops in the summer and I got stung 4 times the first year I bought this bike. We have a crap load of yellow jacket here in Oregon and I seem to hit every one of them.
