I think the original question should be Why does Harley Davidson make rubber mounted Dyna motors and counter balanced Softail motors?

Why not just use one engine?

Same reason they make bikes with shocks that are visible and shocks that are hidden, style.

The counterbalancer reduces peak HP a little bit. But its worth it. The Dynas and Baggers have been rubber mount for a long time, so its sort of a tradition thing too. Softails have only had the B motors since 1999?

Makes sense I suppose. They'd either have to increase the price of the tourers or eat the cost. Still, seems they could offer it as an option like ABS to gain the buyers who are turned off by the shaking.

I think they went with the b-engine on the softtail for looks, it's supposed to look like a hardtail. All the other bikes have rubber mount. I always assumed the rubber mount was a little better engine, less moving parts and puts out a little more horsepower.

What I have read is to get the best Softail look, with the engine filling up the frame, there wasn't enough room for the rubber mounts, so they came up with the balanced engine.

boy you guys sure did confuse me... I did ride a street glide once though...thought my arms were gonna fall off when I was stopped! It was smooth as glass while riding though.....great bike.... guess I was used to the "all time" non shaking softail experience :-)
