Thought I would post here as well in case this issue is specific to soft tails or just Night Trains...
I have an 08 Night Train and I noticed that there are several "spots" on the shocks where the metal appears to be deteriorated. Its as if some sort of chemical or the atomosphere did it. Also on the front wheel there are several "pitts" that you can even feel with your hand. These at first look like tiny rock damage; however I have never had this on any of my other bikes or even cars for that matter.
I did notice a bit of thick greasy substance coming out of the hinge where frame connects with the front fork but not sure if this is the cause.
So is this "pitting" normal? I am still under warranty and plan to take it to the dealership but thought I'd do some research in advance....
I have an '08 'Train as well and have noticed some pitting on my front wheel as well, but I am chalking that up to the unusually wet spring we've had and the moisture getting under my cover. Nothing some NevrDull won't take care of.
That hinge you refer to or steering headset has bearings. It also needs to be serviced and adjusted fairly regularly and will ooze grease due to its design.
The pitting on your shocks is most likely rock/gravel/road sand or maybe even acid rain damage. The stock factory lowers wont just pit out on their own.
Pitting is not normal unless neglected, or road debri. These things need care and feeding to stay looking good. Moisture , road grime, brake dust will attack things and need to be cleaned religously to maintian the finish. Chrome for example is somewhat porous and if corrosion can start under it's layer it will blister. A good wax seals these pores up and adds years of life. There are exceptions where no matter what you do the underlying has a contamination which causes corrosion. This would be a classic defect and should be covered. While not common , it does happen to both powercoat, paints and chrome.
