hey guys, here again to ask for opinions on windshields.I have an 09 heritage classic and the stock windshield buffets my eyes to the point of dizziness,(more than my normal dizziness.I think i should go taller as right now my vision is about 2 or 3 inches over the stock one.Whatta ya think?
Tom from http://harleygoodies.com/ here. Windshields are an acquired taste as far as I am concerned. I run a roll bag on my bars on long trips as opposed to a shield. A shield should be a few inches below your sight of vision as opposed to looking through it. I agree on trying lowers as a lot wind gets in between the shield and the tank. I don't have an answer that will help you for sure, as I don't run a shield, but there was someone last week on here who got some lowers to add and was still quite unhappy.
If you are looking over it 2-3 inches it is the right size shield for you. But, to make sure, get a level and put one end on the top of shield and the other towards your face. Get it level and see where it is in reference to your eyes. Maybe it is much more than 3 inches... Looking through a shield is not the way to go - so taller may not be a good idea...
Other alternatives are 3/4 with shield and full face helmets...
The 07 I acquired had a standard size windshield and I replace the plastic with the shorter size so I could look over it. Looking through the windshield seemed to restrict my vision, especially going around curves.
My bike has the chrome lowers and I get very little buffeting even at 70 mph. Lowers are the key me thinks.
I just cut mine this winter about 2 1/2 ins shorter to match the new 09's. the 07's were taller. It has made little difference and actually its better shorter than taller..
some say the lowers help, others say it doesn't.. the wind is definitely coming from under the shield, over your knees and up into your face...
Also I used a ROTO-ZIP, tape the shield good, then do your lay out, it will cut the lexan like butter..use a good grip as it will climb on you. then carefully file edges smooth..
Also do a search on this as it has been talked about many times for years.... search buffering
The wind is coming from underneath. As you are riding, put your left arm across and against your chest. That should deflect some of the wind from below and be a litmus test proving where it's coming from. To get rid of the buffeting.......get rid of the shield or put the lowers on.
