Default ....jaywalker was at fault

This afternoon I was riding on the main street in my town. ( v. slowly 10 - 20 km/h.)

Suddenly a man darted from between parked cars and attempted to run across the street. It was too late for me to stop...I hit him....I went down. My foot was pinned under the bike...some people lifted the bike off me ...I was not hurt.
The ‘hit’ pedestrian was indeed hurt and transported to the hospital by ambulance. ( don’t know how serious.....he was in pain)

The police told me.. they had witness reports stating that I was not at fault. The jaywalker was at fault.

But!! Still...this really shook me up..give me a ‘shot’ of adrenalin.

I was not ‘ticked’ at the guy ( I know many bikers would be) ...I don’t know what his problem was...why he did it.

Anyway, I share this to remind you all.. to keep your eyes peeled... ride safe.

He might be looking for a cash cow. Expect a lawsuit. Get all your ducks in a row, the officer, the witness' ect.... I trust no one anymore.

"keep your eyes peeled... ride safe."
As big as your eyes were, just how do ya keep em peeled?
Was the person trying to catch a bus?
A cab?
A ride downtown?
Going to the promised land?
Or more than likely, to the blood center?
IDIOTS all around.
Jon

edit add: Or see above: trying to catch a cash cow?

Make sure you go to the precinct and get the accident report. Hopefully all the witnesses are listed. Unfortunately Cops get lazy and screw up reports. They notoriously omit witnesses. Worst case scenario, contact a lawyer, they can track down witenesses.

I am used to NYC. I moved to NJ a few years ago. In NJ, they have a yield to pedestrians by cars law It is retarded. It is supposed to be when a pedestrian is at an intersection and steps into the road, cars are suppose to stop. They jay walk, walk right into traffic, like cattle, expecting you to stop. I also have a NY habit of crossing a road, not in the intersection and standing on the traffic lane waiting or trafic to clear, to finish crossing the street. Cars slam on their brakes or no reason, waving me to cross.

Poor parenting. wasn't raised to look before he crosses the street.

Not much dammage at all.

Windshield is off centre by about 1".... Juat a matter of having the frame holding it straightened out.

Fortunately I had an engine guard put on about 2 weeks ago. The guard has a small scratch but without it I would have had major dammage to the side of the bike because I did slide several feet.

This morning I'm getting the accident report. Hopefully it has all necessary details.

(thanks above ....for reminding me to make sure the witnesses are listed)
