Default '06 fxst/i rear wheel ?

I purchased a factory HD rear spoke wheel off of ebay (part# 41558-08) that came off of an '08 night train. I called the dealership to make sure that it would just be a bearing change. They agreed and said they would need to order the parts. When I called back to order the parts they said they weren't sure if it would actually work. That the outer diameter of the bearing is the same but that the thickness was different. They want me to bring the bike up and let them see what they can come up with. They don't really want to give me an estimate and I am sure I will have to pay at least a check out charge (which is fair) regardless of the outcome. They sound pretty negative about the whole thing so I don't know if I even want to take it to them.

I guess my question is, I see aftermarket wheels for sale all the time where you state how you want them setup and they install the correct bearings. Am I wrong? Is there more to it than that? Is there physically a different wheel that needs to be used with a 25mm bearing as opposed to a .75" bearing?

machined wheels like those from PM have removable hubs.......maybe that's why the wheel itself is more interchangable. It is probably possible to source bearings from somwhere besides the dealer if you know the outer and inner diameter and the thickness that you need.

Ahhhh...I didn't realize that. Sounds like more research is in order.
Thanks for the direction.

what do you mean by thickness not being the same? did you mean width? if the outer is the same as stock then you only need to order stock bearings with the correct inner size or change the axial size. spacers would be the only other change if needed and maybe that is the thickness your talking about

Sorry for the bad description but yeah the width of the bearing. Outer diameter is the same.

I wish I had somewhere I could pull the wheel, (no garage and my drive way is on a semi-steep incline,) and see what it looks like.

So once I buy the new bearings I should be able to use the correct spacer to make up for the difference of the bearing?

Very cool...can't wait to get this wheel on!!!

Yes, you should be able to use bearings to fit your axle. The more difficult part is finding external spacers to make up the difference. I had to do this for my '07 fxst. HD didn't make the "Reaper" rear wheel for the '07 models. So, I bought one for an '08, and made it fit. It's a little wider, so it took some work.

I had the same problem fitting a 2008 FXSTC front wheel to my 2006 FXST, the 2006 bearings are wider and once fitted to the 2007 they are slightly proud of the wheel recess. I had to shave a bit of the spacers to make it fit

I just got word back from HD that they couldnt put it on for pretty much the reason you guys are describing. The bearings are too wide and when when seated they still protrude. Service manager did not want to leave it like that. He said that bad things could happen from that.
He mentioned that we could change axles but that either we would need to drill the swing arm (which he advised not to do...and im not that interested in.) He also mentioned that maybe we can find someone to make a custom bearing the correct size.

My next question for you gurus, does anyone know of a 3rd party that makes a 3/4" bearings the same width as the 25mm bearings?

Thanks

Ive had my wheel on for over a thousand miles now, yes the bearings are very slightly proud but Ive had no problems and the dealer was happy to fit them for me. If you ever find a place that does the bearings you want I would get a pair jst to improve the looks
