ok I still don't understand adjusting the clutch.. I just stopped at my local dealer and ask them how often I need to adjust the clutch they told me the only thing they do on a service is loosen the cable and lube it then readjust it.. is this what you are talking about ???

I think the word Readjust the clutch is the what everyones saying......

Doing Ur services at the proper time on any thing with wheels on it is not costing U money..

Its really saving U money in the long run..

That would be something you don't EVEN want to contemplate and I seriously doubt that's an issue anyway.
Unless I'm mistaken you would have to break all of the splines on the crank shaft or the inside of the compensator for something like that to happen.
So its far more likely to be a maladjusted or worn out clutch that's causing the problem.

He is either wrong or he isnt doing his job.

They should be taking off the clutch cover and adjusting the bolt on the clutch pack, as well as servicing the cables.

The procedure is clearly defined in the service manual, as well as the fact that the procedure is performed at each 5,000 mile service interval.

Did you actually speak to a mechanic, or just some sales or parts guy?

ok I ask a mech/tech if there was any reason to go into the clutch pack and make any adj - take off the derby cover . he said what they normally do is jus loosen the cable and lube it and than readjust it.. he thought is was funny that I said if what you guys are saying is true I owed my bike at least 8 clutch adjustments . oh well I am goingto keep going as I have and see what happens so far over 45 thou and still good to go . just for the heck of it I also ask about changing trans oil and his answer was why? maybe after a couple of years of high mileage..personelly I see no reason to do things just because I can and yes I can owned a bike shop in the 60's and was a mech for 20 years then a machinist for 18 yrs..

Softail04,
It's all part of the maintenance of all the moving mechanical part of your bike. Think of It like brushing your teeth do you have to? No,will you still have teeth sure but I bet you'll have some cavities too that you may not know about. As for your mechanic I wouldn't take my bike there anymore. Once again It's like going to a dentist that tells you It's not necessary to brush your teeth! Sounds to me like they're just taking your $$$

ok jusst sounds to me that you guys are doing a lot of things that don't need to be done just because you can or somebody said it was required .. I talk to the people that service HD at the dealer and they tell me it's not needed as I suspected.. I am amased at all the things I see on here as needed changing engine oil every 3 thou. miles, using only HD items, changing trans oil often, and many more things that I can not remember at this time.. I bought my bike to ride ,not to work on just because I can.. sorry for being so contrary but don't see the need

Softtail04, your going to make some shop or dealer very rich. And I would not want to be the fool that buys your bike when the time comes. JMHO
