Default clutch vs. belt slip?

Hello,

'05 Train, when hitting the throttle hard from a 60mph cruise, something is definately slipping, as it "hiccups" before taking off. Definatley feels mechanical as oppose to tuning because the revs go up, its not like its bogging down. The clutch has only been adjusted at its first dealer service, which was about 27,000 miles ago. It shifts fine though, and if I start it in gear with the clutch in it won't lunge. The belt, on the other hand, has never been adjusted and is definately looser than spec. With just moderate force with 2 fingers I can probably get an inch of slack. Seems to me the belt would have to be very, very loose for it to slip?

I am running ATF in the primary, The bike has definately been rode hard, but I am not a heavy guy (175) and I very rarely have a passenger, so I can't see the clutch being worn out at 30,000mi. Other than this hiccup the bike runs like a scalded dog. If I go through all the gears hard it will slip every gear when I let the clutch out.

I will get to adjusting that belt soon, just wanted to hear some opinions or advice, thanks all.

Your clutch cable and clutch pak in your primary should be adjusted every 5,000 miles. If you don't get that done asap you are going to find your bike won't get out of gear and out a few hundred bucks on repair + tow

Adjust your clutch via the nut behind the primary cover and your belt. PM me if you want the pages from the 05' Softail service manual scanned.

I have had my clutch out of adjustment before 5000 miles. If you are doing a lot of city driving, it may need adjustment before the 5000 mile mark.

You should adjust it to help it last longer.
Keeping it adjusted properly allows the springs to exert the maximum amount of force on the clutch pack to maintain its hold against slipping.
Not doing so will accellerate the wear by eventually letting it slip more and more until its doing exactly what jjc839 stated, slipping in every gear.

To jjc839,
I wouid adjust the clutch, belt tension, and tracking pronto.
A already stated why you need to do the clutch.
If the belt tension is as loose as you say, and its been that way for some time it may be too late to save it. So I would have it checked by a reputable dealer or indy ASAP.
Running with the belt too loose eats both the belt and the sprocket teeth. Left too long and it can get rather expensive to fix. Not to mention the fact that even brand new belts can easily be broken when they are adjusted too loose.

If not the clutch/belt...Could be the Compensating sprocket.
