Default Springer Front End Grease

I just got a 2009 Crossbones. A little grease always comes out at the joint where the forks attach to the frame. There is a grease zert there. Is this typical and do I just need to to grease it every so often to keep it from all coming out?

The shop manual says grease every 2500 miles.

It will seep in the hot wheather a bit.
I would only use the Harley recommend grease. Did a huge search on this and fewest problems with the Harley stuff.
There are two differnt ones. Get the manual for sure.

Its a very common 'problem' with all new Harley's. The warmer the weather the more it seems to leak. its not bad so don't worry about it.
Just keep a rag handy to wipe it off frequently until it stops or you'll be cursing up a storm the next time you wash it because of all the dirt that collects on the front of the tank and the front cylinders rocker cover.

I have an 05 FL Springer and if it's the same as mine your front end should be serviced every 2500 miles. That includes Steering head bearing tension and lower rocker bearing torque. The front wheel and fender have to be removed to do this.

Get a Service manual or plan on allot of trips to the shop.

Very common all bikes do it, just a little way of letting you know that you got grease in there to the bearings. However I you dont have to use only harley grease bearings are
bearings use a good bearing grease.

I'm new to the springer frontend as well (Crossbones 09') but I've done a lot of question asking of a certified Harley mechanic, my mechanic (20+ year Harley vet mechanic) and several long time springer owners and what I'm gathering is that the hype about the frequent service from the factory is bunk. I mean what serious rider is going to take his Harley into the shop every 2500 mile? !!
For me that would be every other month.

A current certified vet mechanic told me " they usually only require checking every 3-4 thousand miles at most". My vet mechanic (who's brother own a springer for many years) said don't worry about it just keep them clean so they don't rush and he'll check it when it's in for regular service. I also talked with two springer owners who both agreed there's no BIG Worry about this, just have it checked when servicing. Each had racked up considerable miles with zero issues and minimal maintenance.

My recommendation is be safe and do what you think is best for your bike. Education is key, ask around and do buy the manual so you'll better understand what's involved. If you feel like it needs to go in every 2500 miles then do that but know that "in practice" that isn't what riders are doing.

As for the grease issue mentioned above, so far no grease leaks here. Hope it stays that way! Just finished a 200 mile ride in 80 degree weather, no problems what so every.
