jumpy Tachometer
The needle on the HD tachometer that came on my '02 Standard tends to jump around a lot, especially in the 2K to 3K range. Not bad enough that it's not usable, but annoying and something worth fixing.
Wanted to see if anybody else has had this problem and if there is a relatively straightforward fix.

I beginning to wonder if that's the nature of the beast. Maybe the way the coil fires etc.
I have a autometer tach and jumps a bit just like that at about 2.5.-3000 rpm but it seems to do that only at part throttle- say at cruising speed-60mph and giving it a bit more to pass. Then it levels out again. My connections area good as I soldered them to the coil wires in the harness.

I dont know guys, I had all mine soldered too. What I did was to leave the connections open where I could touch them. The I fired the bike up and in neutral ran it up to like 2500 rpm. It was jumping and I handeled each wire until I noticed it stop. I then repaired that connection and no more problems.
I have had the same problem with the mini tack I put on my 07 Train. I changed the wiring and checked all the connections and nothing worked.
What did seem to work was loosing the screw in the back of the mounting cup to loosen the tension/pressure on the rubber cup gasket to allow it to absorb vibrations better (I think). I just put a dab of clear silicone on the threads of the screw so it would not back out. It did seem to work out OK. All I can think of is that there maybe a cracked circuit board or a bad connection inside the tach that vibrations at a certain RPM are affecting it. Loosening the cup as is I said seemed to work for me.
If it happens again I will just buy a new tach. But so far so good.
