I use to get around 220 highway miles and would cost me about 4.2 gallons. After I warmed the engine up it went to around 140 miles. Also a 5 gallon tank WILL hold 5.2 gallons, trust me!!!
I pushed it to around 160 one time when I was out riding around in the back roads of Missouri. I was more worried that I was in the middle of no-where and I had no idea where the nearest gas station was. That was pretty nerve racking. Even still it only took about 4 gallons, so I got about 200 I guess.
Besides that though, I usually fill up around 130.
What kind of mileage are y'all getting? Even my Springer with the 103" motor gets close to 40 if I am not rocking it and my wife's Heritage gets over that. I never worry until I am at 175 unless I am in the middle of nowhere.
I must be lucky. my remainder mileage counter on my speedo is pretty much dead-on. I get right at 40mpg on a regular basis. when my R counter reads 40 miles left, I fill up.
when I fill up at that point, I get just a tenth or two under 4 gallons into the 5 gallon tank.....very accurate.
BUT, I also hit my trip meter at every fill up and monitor it regularly. I will get gas by 175 miles of travel, at the latest, regardless of what my indicators are telling me!
I like the idea of filling up a container, somebody told me to take a water bottle (like poland springs) rinse it with gas to get the water drips out, then fill it up and carry it with you for a reserve.
I think the whole point of this thread was to state that the light comes on for most of us with 2 gallons left or so.
I am going to push my bike and just use the mileage to gauge it. Otherwise, my light is on around 115 miles. Then usually have at least 2 gallons left in my tank. So will try to do the mileage test (when it stops raining here!!).
I was riding home from Summerville this afternoon. I usually stop for gas around 100-125 on the odometer, but I let it go a little longer. I know my bike gets pretty good mileage, but I start to get nervous after 125. I don't trust my fuel guage at all (especially after the tank lift). I finially got to a gas station with about 145 on the tank. I was sweating a bit by then. It took 3 gallons to fill the tank. I don't know why it worries me so much. It just does.
I have been averaging 40 MPG on my bike with a highway/city ratio about 40:60.
I know I can go 200 miles on a tank if I want to take it down to the last drop.
I will usually fill it anywhere from 150 - 175 though.
You went 145 on 3 gallons of gas. Thats damn good. You had close to a hundred miles left before you went dry.
