Honestly I'm about to yank my return cable. If anything it makes my smooth throttle not so smooth. The return spring on the throttle body is plenty stout. My idle cable is coming off.
Plus I like the clean look of a single cable.
Did the same thing on my 07' KTM 525 Thumper. Smoothed up the throttle and zip tied the idle cable to my frame to use in case of cable failure.
Yeah. I've been riding bikes, from mopeds to this HD, for over 40 years now. Most of 'em POS's and only this HD and my last Kawi have been dual cable set-ups.
I've never had a cable failure on a bike. Did on a 240z once. That was scary. But simple shut down procedures (similar to mentioned above) got me coasting to the side of the road.
If this is the case and it seems that the probability of failure is slim... So an internal cable through the bars would be a possibility... hmmmm...sounds like a project..
If you are worried about smoothness arlen ness makes a roller bearing that sets in the bars and the throttle rests on it to make it smoother I have one and it works great. There all over ebay for like 30$.
Adding to the trend of APEs threads, I'll ask this question....
I'll be putting 16" apes on my FLSTC soon and am planning on going to a single throttle cable vs. the dual cables. Simply for looks.
Anyone have any opinion on this? Bad idea? Did the same? Never thought of it? What's a throttle cable?
As I understand it, the second cable is only a safety feature. I don't need no stink'n safety feature.
Though I like the look of hidden wires, cables etc, or even reducing them, I would stick to a dual cable setup. Safety feature your basically bypassing. If you ride alot do you really want the potential for another failure point? Better be practiced in hitting the kill switch, if the looks override the functionality. Do they make internal/dual throttle cable setups? Maybe look into that arrangement to clean up the bikes looks if its an option.
