I ride an `05 FXSTI.I`m hearing a metallic sound, kind of like a ping or a rattle. Its really noticeable in 3rd gear, around 35mph.It makes the sound hot or cold.To me,it sounds like its coming from the primary area, but its hard to stick my head down around the motor when riding.
The bike has 3200 miles.Uses Mobil 1 in the crankcase;and HD oil in the primary.Mobil 93 always,so I dont think the engine is pinging.
Its not the "tick" that everyone talks about;its totally different.Almost like a loose catalytic converter shield on a car.I checked around for anything loose, but came up empty handed.
Just curious if anyone else has expierenced this noise.
Thanks in advance,Mark.
Noises that happen at certain speeds only are often caused by something that is being shaken at its resonant frequency. It could be almost anything. Go all around your machine and thump on things, look for rattles. It could be the horn cover, it could be the license plate, it could be a loose bolt on your highway pegs, the wind guards may be just touching the turn signals, the list is long...when you find something that rattles fix it.
I get somewhat of the same sound on my 03 about the same speed. I check the primary chain and everything else was tight so to to fix this i wear ear plugs and the noise went away. Figure if the trans is shifting fine and the motor runs it must be ok. These bikes do have noise and my 90 it sounds like nuts and bolts are rattling around in the motor.
