Question here? My 04 night train FXSTBI's 5000 miles is coming up soon. I looked in the general 04 softtail service manual and it say's to change oil/primary/tranny fluid. Now I know that the oil needs changed, but I can only locate two plugs underneath my bike. On the 04 night train FXSTBI do you have to change all three fluids? Or does changing the oil take care of the primary and tranny, in that do you also have to change the primary and tranny also? Probably a dumb question, but I want to make sure before I go ahead and change it out.
Oil's at the bottom of the drain tube just ahead of the swingarm on the right side. Transmission's underneath between the shocks. Primary's under the derby cover on the left side.
All this information is in the owner's manual, and if you intend to service the bike yourself, I strongly suggest getting a shop manual too.
Good info, yeah I did buy the 04 softail manual, although it is not specific to the night train, just specific to softails in general. Probably should purchase the service manual specifically for the year and model of my ride. Thanks man.
You need to change all the fluids. Your bike is around 6 years old. I would be slightly concerned if you've been riding around with the same fluids for all those years.
Time will break down fluids and make them less functional just like heat does.
Going forward I would change fluids at the beginning and end of each riding season. Oil is cheap.
No, everything was changed out around the 3,000 mile marker when I bought the bike. I was just getting all information I could before I change all this again before I put her away for the winter, dam northeast!
Also saw that most people either use something like mobil 1 for all three. Others say they use something like mobil 1 for oil/primary and redline for tranny. Any recommendations?
Great website, I appreciate you directing me to that website. It definelty makes it alot easier seeing actuall pictures rather then reading right from the manual.
