Default Ever seen oil failures?????

I just bought my first HD (07 Heritage Classic w/1200 mi). This bike is great; I hope it lasts forever. Anyway; I have decided to switch to synthetic and the oils I am looking at by rank are; Amsoil, Mobil 1 VTwin, Redline, ans HD SE SYN3. I was wondering if anyone had any negative or positive experiences or even failures with these oils. All advice would be appreciated.
Also; What is the best technique for washing my bike to minimize swirling and scuffing paint? My brother never puts water on his but I would think that may scratch the clearcoat.

Personally I havent heard of any motor oil quality related failures on Twin Cam motors....

What I have herad of is the later model Twin Cammers having very rare and isolated instances of crank slippage or the crank runout becomming excessive which in turn can destroy the oil pump hence destroying the motor in the process....

This is a fairly rare occurance and the 96" 07 and 08 motors and what I have read were the most affected. I read somewhere they started making the 07 cranks in China? Maybe they were made there before as well but thats the rap thats handed them on stroker 07 bikes.

The 2009 and up have addressed the issue with something different done to the crank during the manufacturing process. I think they put the better SE crank in the 09+ bikes.

Heres some info:http://www.hdtalking.com/harley_davi...r_greater.html

I always felt that if you keep to the schedule then just about any quality oil will be able to last under normal circumstances. If you push it hard on a track or on dirt roads or in heavy traffic on hot summer days then you'll probably shorten your change interval anyway.

I prefer Mobile 1 V-Twin synth simply because it is available almost anywhere without having to order it or find it at a distant shop. Better or worse than the rest on your list? In 2500 miles, I don't think it makes a difference.

only read of a couple engine issues. but even those we don't really know how they were ridden.
Couple of bad motors out of 1/2 million ain't bad in my opinion unless its Ur motor....

when the 96's first came out there was all kinds of bad press in here every day from the naysayers (Heat, Camshafts, Cranks, Tensioners, Stoker). . But now after 3yrs none of the several major issues that was thought to become big problem on the new 96 has come true, some are even better....Actually most talk about them are even better than the 88's in some areas

I read back when the 88's first came out in 2000, almost the very same things were said about those motor also.. they also proved to not be true...

I use Bel Ray for the trans and no wine or clank and I can find neutral. I use Motor FactoryŽ Primary Case Lube in the primary. because Amsoil has gone up so much I just switched to Mobil 1 for vtwin and it works as good. I have 39,000 miles in about 2 years and it runs great and no debris in the oil changes.

mine gets taken to the car was for a bath and a wax. dont ever use the degreaser because some will frost the aluminum. I use the gentle shower as if it was raining and when the bike is cool i user the foam brush and then the high pressure soap, high pressure rinse, wax the tank, fenders, and chrome, then gentle shower to wash away extra wax and then towel dry. one day i may try the drive thru touchless was wearing a rain suit.
if you are going to wash by hand get a soft plastic toilet brush. easy to clean without cutting your hands. i used to use that blue magic soap/wax and it cut grease well but then again so does Palm olive dishwashing

you will get a a lot of input on oils...mine is the same as others...use a good oil that meets specs and change it often and you will never have issues.

that said. I am a paint guy and love the challenge of keep cars/bikes from swirling.

First - use a good microfiber hand mitt and good quality soap.
Second - and most important use two TWO buckets. One with soap and one with water. After you touch your paint with the mitt always always rinse your mitt out very well before you go back to your soap. This will keep you from grinding dirt back into your paint.
Third - Once you have washed it, use a claying kit.
Fourth - Polish
Fifth - Wax (and no polish and wax are not the same!)

I am a die hard meguiars guy. I love their products and use them on all my project cars and bikes. I have an black f250 and it has show room finish year round with now swirl marks. (no I do not work for meguiars, just love the stuff like some of you AMSoil freaks)

If you want to know how follow this link and apply the knowledge to your bike paint.

That said, make sure you do not spend so much time petting your bike you stop riding it.
