My wife's 06 Night Train with 4000 miles just started acting up. Cruising along the speedo needle starts jumping then the bike stalls. Starts right up no problems for awhile. Did a search saw a couple posts to check the speed sensor. The 06 is enclosed and doesn't collect metal shavings.
Anyone with this problem? Sensor replacement fix it?
I had the same issue with my '08 replaced the speed sensor and fixed the problem. When this happens the turn signals won't cancel either. The sensors fail when hot, they open. Hope this helps you
Just went thru the same thing with my 05. No codes came up even though the light was on.Had a starter fail and was replaced on the road when the problem started.After 1100 miles of watching the speedo jump I started running it down with and ohm meter on every wire. Found 1 ground wire from the speedo sensor broke.Fixed that and made it 3miles before it started again.Now I'm pissed.Rip everything out from under the seat ohm meter out again.Several hours later checked the run/brake turn signal module.Seems when they put the module back under the seat they put it in sideways and it cracked the board in there breaking another of the 50 grounds on the bike.Disconnect yours if you have one.
I had mine at the dealer and went thru all the wiring, called the MoCo and found the answer the speed sensor, the MoCo knows they have a problem with them according to the rep I talked to. Do check the grounds though. Good luck with it,
The speed sensor seems to be a very common problem. Replace the whole unit. It is pretty inexpensive. On my 03 when it went, the speedo went out along with the turn-signal canceling. It didn't stall but I guess the older bike doesn't have all the sensors an 06 might have. Mine did throw codes.
Might not solve this problem but it is a pretty inexpensive repair and probably would need to be done soon anyway. Let us know how it turns out in the end.
As for codes, I think there are two different sets of codes that need to be read. One is the "P" numbers on the speedo but the other can be read with an analyzer or by jumpering a certain plug, hitting a combination of turn-signal buttons and counting the flashes on the turn-signals. I've seen a few posts about how to read these codes in different forums.
