Default Deluxe floorboards scraping

Hey all...Question about my Deluxe. Before this, I had a XL1200C that I got very very comfortable with. I could really lean into turns and had no concern. But since I got my Deluxe, I've noticed that the floorboards scrape going into turns at a certain degree. It has happened 3 times. The first 2 were not so bad, but the 3rd time scared the living crap out of me. It actually jerked my entire bike upright very abruptly right in the middle of the turn. Now I am very cautious while making turns to the point that it's no fun turning. I guess I got too used to my Sportster. Should I be this paranoid about this? Or am I making it out to be a bigger deal than it is. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Floor boards scraping is not a problem....Just means you are reaching the limit of lean angle for that bike....Remember the deluxe is low.

Hubby scraps is VTX floor boards all the time. I haven't done it yet but I'm sure it is coming.

What you will do is make lots of scratches on the bottom of the floor boards and may have to replace them more often

I doubt the bike uprighted, you probably freaked a bit and jerked upright.

I scrape mine all the time. Usually not too bad, as I have figured the limits and stay there.

I did recently drag em so hard, a parkinglot full of bikes looked up to see the 'wreck'. It sounded really bad, but wasn't. In fact, it hardly scratched them. There was a good coating of asphault on them though.

make sure you can rotate them up and they aren't binding then all will be OK.

I have a lowered Fatty and I scraped all the time. I put HD extended forward controls on her and I have not touched yet except once on the left side kick stand a little bit. I love the forward controls look and comfort on my Fatty. Be sure your floor boards fold up without too much effort, they should fold upward way before weight is transfered off your rear tires. If you REALLY need to lean over that far you may need to look at a different bike set up.

Yeup. Pretty normal occurance. In fact, most times I go into a turn I scrape. The Deluxe is so low (way cool) that I have on a few occasions even scraped the lower pipe (V&H big shots staggered). That kind of bothered me-----SCRATCHED CHROME!!! Ouch!

Oh yeah, the sparks and night are WAAAAAYY COOL!

Anyway, as I say, Ride on........Scrape on!

I can relate. Rode a '98 XLH 1200 Sporty for 8 years. Just traded her in on an '06 FLSTCI. Can't lean her over like the Sporty. [sm=yikesomg.gif] Scraped my right floorboard. Scared the snot out of me!

Like you, I've scraped before and had the bike feel like a bucking bronco. Wham!!! the back end kicked up! [sm=crossbonesgif.gif] I suppose it's possible to get high-sided or lose traction and go into a slide. I wonder if someone has done this. I must admit, my experience was on a rice burner, not a 750 lb. Harley--but the driver pegs were much higher off the ground than on my current ride...an '06 Heritage. I'll have to look at my Heritage to see if this is possible. I think the lean angle you're talking about may be steeper than what most are thinking, because you are used to leaning farther with your previous bike. I'm sure my face turned white as a sheet before I completed the turn. [sm=escape.gif] My advice...like someone on this post said...make sure your floorboards hinge upward like they're supposed to...then experiment with just enough lean to scrape and pivot the floorboard. I once knew someone who added metal to the bottom of the floorboard so he could make sparks without seeing dollar signs. Good luck, and happy turns to you![sm=biker2.gif]

As a former motorcop....you guys are flirting with disaster...go a little to far and you will frame out and lift the rear and wam...on your a@#. it is true that when you hear the boards you ar near max lean angle. When you do it often you wear the boards and you get closer and closer to the frame....learn your limits in a parking lot where you wont get as hurt. Some real tight turns and you can scrape if you master rear brake and throtle control...You not going to be able to push the new bike as far the lean angle and center of gravity is much lower.....by a buel for fun...

I've got an 06 Heritage and I scrape the boards every now and then. Try not to let it freak you out, just angle up a little bit and roll on the throttle at the same time - it'll complete the turn and keep it smooth.
