your in luck. i tried the metzler 210/50-17 and it fits and lowers the gear ratio and handles great but only lated 4700 miles compared to the dunlop that lasted 9 to 10k.
i wanted both the handling and the milage. i just tried the new dunlop roadsmart. sport tread but hard rubber center. i only have 500 miles on it but it handles great like a metzler and it is a 200/50-17 so the mph were off 3 at 60. it reduced enough to make the 6th gear very useable. because i have thundermax i can calibrate the speedometer and it is accurate now. the tire was cheaper than metzler and i would say try it.
as far as a screw the debate goes on. i plugged my dunlop stock and rode it until 8000 miles with a rope plug from walmart. it was in between the tread pattern just offset from center. http://www.americanmototire.com/cata...oducts_id=4609
I just switched from stock Dunlop to Pirelli Night Dragons front and rear....right off the bat, I noticed that it seemed to handle better, but not enough mileage yet to give an overall opinion.
