If your gonna get a larger tank, get an aftermarket one, that way if you want to go back you still got your old parts. I think a 7 or 8 gal would look kinda odd. I put a 6 gallon on and it is way wide.
Where did you get your tank. I am looking for one as well. I am from Jersey, and so far have over 60K on my ride. Looking for longer road time and less fumes time!!
I wonder if a creative person could get a set of flat sides to mount up? Manufactures have been making 6 gallon flat side softail tanks for decades. They would be a nice option as they are dirt cheap and look very nice.

I think if one were to do an external electric fuel pump, the rest of installing a 6 gallon flat side tank would be fairly straightforward.
Then again, if a really large capacity tank was my goal, I suppose I would buy a used stock EFI tank and take it to a custom metalwork shop and have it widened (sideways, slightly, and upwards, definitely) and stretched lengthwise to keep the visual proportions. It might cost me a grand for the metal work and paint, but I think one could have a seven gallon tank on their Softail if it was really important.
Heck, if it was done well, I bet there would be a market for it.
