Default to baffle or not to baffle

Its come down to this. was wondering if I need to remap my fuel injected softail if i take out the baffels in the V&H shorties. I know I will lose low end due to lack of backpressure, but is there anyone out there that has done this without having to remap...and without significant low end loss. I did this on my first bike and went down to Lowes, bought a 1" L-bracket, drilled a hole in it and screwed it in place of the old baffle mounting hole to get some backpressure, it worked ok but It wont work for these types of pipes. Any suggestions would be great.

them short shots ain't loud enough for ya, huh?

if you decide to pull the baffles, you could put some torque cones in there, or maybe some lollipops, but i wouldn't remove the baffles. then again, my buddy did it to his 'bones when he moved to the LAF exhaust. said he sn't in to racing so to him the power loss wasn't that significant. thing sounds awesome, too.

i would think that no remap is necessary unless you change the intake, as well. my friend kept his same intake and i don't believe he did a remap.

Thanks Grimm. I wouldve said the shorties were loud enuf...if I hadnt noticed the baffles. Now just knowing it could be louder haunts me. By tha way, your trike is sick. Did you do that conversion?

I've had short shots on two bikes. They are very quiet with the baffles in. My last bike, a Fatboy, I took them out. They sounded good, a little too loud actually, but lost alot of mid-range torque. My current Night Train, I replaced the baffles with Big City Thunder Monster Baffles. They sound great and i haven't lost any performance. Basicly all they are is a washer that screws into where the baffle was to add some back pressure. Same concept of you putting the L bracket in. I've also seen people weld a washer inside there pipes.

that's what i was referring to when i mentioned lollipops.

yeah. that's the same bike from my accident. my buddy has a shop and we got together, ripped it apart and that's what we came up with. thanks for the comps!

I have the Big Shots on my FXST and I cut the baffles in half. Sounds good and it runs way better than when I took them out.

I also tried cutting my baffles, about a 1/4 at a time and didn't have any improvement with the sound.

My PCIII had maps for V&H pipes with and without baffles, so I would say you need to remap, especially if you have opened up the intake (non-stock intake/filter). I spoke to the guys at Big City Thunder when I ordered my "Thunder Monsters" and they said to use the "with baffle" map when using their baffles (if you can call them baffles )

If you have a stage 1 upgrade w/ no PC, no upgrade is needed. There is only one upgrade for aftermarket exhaust. If you have a PC or similar device, I would follow Wallaby's advice. However you should probably install a washer or something to improve backpressure/harmonics. I have the Big City Thunder Monster Baffles and would advise against it due to the high $$ and simple design. $100 for a washer is rediculous!
