All the softails (except Deuce) have a 5 gallon tank. On the carby models the reserve is roughly 1/2 a gallon but I know from experience that it starts to cough after 4 gallons and I have to switch it over to the reserve which leaves about a gallon left. On the fuel injected models they have a low fuel level warning light that may not be so accurate. When the light comes on you may still have 1.8 gallons left.
I found out how small the reserve is on my bike, and almost ran out of gas, hehehe... I'd always thought it was around 1 gallon, but it's actually less than 1/2 a gallon. And the other day I put over 5 gallons in and I wasn't empty, so I guess my tank is a bit bigger than the 5 gallons HD says it is. Which is just fine by me. Hell, I'd like it if it was 6 gallons!
My light comes on at about 120-130. I put in about 3.5 gallons of gas at that point. This means that on a 5 gallon tank I am getting roughly 40 miles/gallon. So just go by the Odometer and you should be fine. I am at about 170 right now and my light has been on since 125. I will fill up next time I am out.
I've got an injected 06 Standard with exhaust and stage 1. I ride hard and fast because this bike just seems to like to run like that. I ride mostly in-town and the light comes on at 120-130(which freaked me out at first).
I refuel at 200 miles and it will chug down just about all of a five gallon can except for maybe half a gallon.
I've been as far as 210 and put 4.9 gallons in it.
My light comes on between 110-120miles usually.
I get 41mpg usually, but not always. Never worse though.
This has been my experience as well with the deluxe. thinking of getting a 1.5 liter camping fuel bottle and filling it with gas and sticking it in the saddle bag on my long tour through arizona, just in case. The fuel injected bikes reserve tank!
Mine is fairly new, so I'm still trying to gauge the fuel situation. Filled up one morning and road into the country out by Hartstine Island and back into Olympia (around 154 miles that day), no light on, and it took around 3.4 gallons. Only has 300+ miles on it, so I suspect engine is still breaking in. EFI, so reserve isn't much. Dealer told me to use one of the odometer trip mileage reading until I get a feel for the gas/mileage.
