Fuel Line fixed on 07 Softail Heritage
A variety of possibles for the problem resulted in: Idle Air valve malfunction, throttle sensor, etc. I suspected that it could be dirt in the tank causing the fuel pump to get clogged thus reducing fuel pressure. Finally a H-D mech said it was possibly a hole in the fuel line.
After removing the fuel pump and relating parts I found the following: dirty fuel filter (25,500 miles) and a hole in the fuel line from the quick connect to the fuel regulator. The fuel line rubbed on the top of the gas tank (left side, upper). When the fuel level dropped below a certain level fuel pressure was lost causing the bike to stall.
Remedy: replace fuel filter with kit. (Replace quick connect line. This comes as one piece for about $30.)
Cautions: be gentle with the fuel pump assembly. Make sure you have necessary parts as recommended by the manual. The plastic fuel hoses are a pain to get on the pump and filter. The one going on the regulator is fairly easy. Use H-D clamps.
Backround: Apparently H-D has realized they used too long a line from the quick connect to the regulator. The inside of the tank is rough. If your bike behaves as above and is under warranty-take it to the shop ASAP. Mine ran out in June of 07. Hopefully the new line won't rub as it seemed a little shorter.
Interesting note: if you blow through the old fuel line (one with the hole) it sounds like a flute. It can be used for calling your dog or cat.
