Default Fall project

103 and a 6-speed added by Dave at JD's Cycleworks in Bethlehem, PA. Dave's about as good as it gets, and he's not a "happy dyno" guy. The attached chart is SAE...116/116 out of a freakin' 103.

OK, here's the menu:
-TMan stage 2 heads w/compression releases
-Tman 625 gear-drive cams
-10.5:1 compression
-S&S crank
-Baisley roller rockers
-Feuling Super Pump w/Baisley spring
-Timken conversion
-HPI 55mm throttle body
-5.3 injectors
-closed-loop retrofit
-S/E 6-speed

First of all, the thing sounds great. It's got a much harsher "thump" to it. Lay into it, and it sounds like the coming of the Apocalypse....And that's with a quiet baffle....

Leaving Bethlehem, I took it easy to let the motor warm up. I got out onto 78, and got comfortable at about 70mph in 6th. For fun, I rolled on the gas on a decent uphill stretch...Went from 70 to 95 in nothing flat. No hesitation, no stumble...It just went.

The torque is unbelievable. I don't have a tach, so I have no idea how close to the power peaks I got, but "like a raped ape" doesn't really describe what the bike does now when I lay into it.

But the best thing is this; if I ride it like a normal person, it just seems like a torquey bike.

The 6-speed is awesome. With all the new torque, I can pass without downshifting, and the motor's nice and relaxed at highway speeds. With a fair amount of throttle abuse, I got 38mpg. Not bad at all considering I was getting 42 with the Stage 1.

Dave listened to what I wanted out of this build, and delivered in spades.

Out of curiosity what did all that set you back? Those numbers are way more than respectable

Quite a bit. More than I was planning on spending....About a Nightster's worth.

But....

Other than the 200mm rear tire (which I don't like the looks or the handling of), I've got a 2010 Night Train. Big power, lots 'o gears, closed-loop fuel injection, and every single reliability issue in the engine has been dealt with.

I've said before that I never plan on getting rid of this bike, so for me, this expense will be spread out over the next 40 years or so.

I am a big JDs fan and Dave is a great guy. Had him do my 95" last winter, which I may have him do the crank this winter and the HPI TB. I am definitely after a 6 spd for sure.

I really went back and forth on the 6-speed. Dave runs a S/E in his bike, and I know a bunch of other guys who swear by it as well. I've only got 300 miles on mine so far, but it makes a world of difference. 80mph on the highway is much more relaxed, and everything just feels tighter than the old 5-speed did.

You've got a monster 95 build (the same one I was going to do 'till I started worrying about my crank) that will easily pull 6th gear. The nice thing too is that if you do it at the same time your motor's apart, it's only a couple of hours of labor.

You might want to consider the closed-loop conversion as well. Mine was the first Dave's done, and he was talking about doing it to his bike next. Now I can use the VTune software that comes with the TTS.

And yeah, Dave's a helluva guy.

I have a TTS, what's involved in the closed loop conversion, some type of sensors?

O2 sensors (your FatCat should have the bungs for them already), and a wiring harness. Then you get to load an '07+ map. That should (I haven't tried it yet) allow you to play around with speedometer correction, as well as all the cool VTune stuff.

And, if you're on a long road trip with drastic elevation changes, your bike will be able to adjust on the fly.

But having access to VTune sold me.

That sounds pretty cool. I am going to speak to Dave about it. First I need to put together the cash for my 6 spd though.

Sounds like you got a great motor. I am planning on going the 103 stage 4 route with my NT but I just bought it and with only 1100 miles on it so far I think it would be a waste to tear apart a brand new motor.

I got 75 HP and 95 Ftlbs torque out of my 96 with a Thundermax, Thunder header and SE Heavy Breather. You are so right Torque makes these bikes a blast to ride. I can get around 42 mpg on mine, but when I play with it, it drops to about 28.

What type of windscreen are you running?

My valve guide seals were shot, and I was worried about my tensioners, so I was able to get everything taken care of at once.

The shield is a Windvest. I won't go on the highway without it now.
