Default Removing Back rest from 09 Heritage

I am not skilled with tools. I want to take off the stock back rest and the chrome piece it slides into. Looks like i need to remove the bags, which seems like i need to remove the nuts on the inside of the bags. Anything else?? Thanks

Took mine off awhile back so I don't remember exactly all the steps. To get your bags off though you need to also remove the lower support bar.

All basic tools and not much to it. I installed the docking hardware and detachable brackets for my backrest but since the wife got her own bike I rarely use it anymore.

Get a manual so you can see what is hidden, or at least look at one. Just about any HD is assembled similarly.

Its simple enough, but I have done several and sometimes it can be a bear.

Be careful not to strip the bolts. When you take them out the frame and fender underneath can shift. You will then need to line it up so you don't strip the bolts.

The nuts holding the bag is nothing. Those nuts are on large duoble threaded bolts that hold the fender to the frame 4 - 6 of them.

Don't get me wrong, its nuts n bolts, anybody can do it.

It's not hard at all. Once you get into it you'll see how simple it is. You don't have to remove the bags completely, leave the bottom brace on, the bags will just lay there when you remove the two top nuts. Then you'll have to remove the studs that the bags were on and one more bolt at the front of the sissy bar side plates. I removed these last. Loosen them a bit, tilt the sissy bar forward and you can replace at least one of the bag support studs so your fender doesn't drop down.

Once you have the bags out of the way you'll see what has to be done alot clearer. Good luck.
