Has anyone tried to attach hard bags to their quick release sissy bar? I want to keep the original quick release set-up and thought about bolting a set directly to the sissy bar to be used as a tour pack..
Thoughts?
Yes but I don't use the HD bolts. I bought a 4 foot threaded stud that matched the threads for the fender bolts, cut it to fit so I had 2 studs sticking out on each side for fender bolts, used a 9/16 bolt on each one to secure the sissy bar docking hardware to the outside of the fender strut, then I slide the bags on the studs with 2 more 9/16 nuts/wing nuts so the bags are easy on/off. Whole thing took about 20 minutes, and cost like 9 bucks. I'll see if I can find some pictures.
Here we go.
Bags on Bags off. I also use washers on each side of the bag cause my cheapo Viking bags are wasted, and it's too much of a pain in the *** to get them to warranty them.
Pure Michigan!! Nice.. I'll see you on a ride sometime.
Thanks for the pics and info. I figured someone out there went through the struggle in searching for bags and decided to make something out of the sissy bar. Too much gap when using the bags release systems.
Hell yea man. Yea no prob happy to help. I haven't used a QD bag system yet but want to look into em. What do you mean too much gap? Like the bags are spaced out too far from the bike?
Attach them to the sissy bar? Why not get longer bolts to have them attach on the sissy bar bolts like above? It works but I would suggest something to support the bags down lower as well. I think it depends on the exhaust your using as well. With the Fat Cat like above and on mine we couldn't use the hard bags from a touring bike because they hang too low.
No but you could buy Viking hard bags, since you choose where they mount anyway, then just mount accordingly. My bags only mount to the bike with 2 bolts, but have brackets that attach at 4 points so they are quite secure.
