Default Holy Crap!

Went to the dealer and got a quote to add a backrest and a Tachometer to my new Fat Boy.

$1008.79

GOD DAMN! [:@]

Thats a significant % of the cost of the whole bike! Just for a backrest and tach?????

Anyone know a better way? Tell me that there is please

Purchase them with Mac and some of the rest of us through our "group buy" and M & M and install them yourself. I'm sure that you coould do the backrest, even if it meant buying a buddy lunch and a 6 pack. If electric bothers you, take it to an indy shop. I'll bet you could get that price cut in half. Art

That sounds better.

How often do you all make buys?

Not trying to sound like an A-hole, but is
the tach just for looks ? The backrest should only
take about fifteen minutes to put on. Where
are they coming up with such a high labor
cost ? If im not mistaken i think there is already
a plug to hook into for the tach under the tank.
I may be wrong on that.[:-]

A valid question, you dont sound like an A-Hole.

The tach is not essential, I just like them. I also liked the way that small tach looks mounted
in the center of the handlebars.

So the answer to your question is yes, the tach is mostly just for looks.

If I cant get a more reasonable price I'll just forget about it.
I'll be damned if I'm paying that much for something I dont really need.

Actually most of the cost was in the seat. There were at least 3 parts involved, a "relocate signals" charge
of something like $25.00 which sounds just like labor to me, I dont know what the difference is,
and a labor fee of $175.00 just for that part.

Another $ 175.00 labor charge for the tach install.

So they were nailing me for $375.00 just for the labor.

I would then need to work in another $10.00 or so to cover the Preperation H for afterwards.

This is the first one AFAIK. Many thanks to Mac for setting it up. It's valid now. I think the code is VTTalk when you order and it's good til either the end of June or June 15th. Doublecheck my info under "Group Buy" .
I agree with you re: the tach. I don't havee to have one, but I'm just used to having one on a bike (and most of my cars).
I forgot about the turn signal relocation. They installed mine for free for ordering the parts before I took delivery, so I don't have a comparison for the labor hours. Take care. Art

I dont think the preperation H will be needed.
I think all Harley shops now carry
K-Y Warming Liquid Personal Lubricant, KY Warming Liquid

If I'm not mistaken, the turn signal relocation is necessary only if you are getting a detachable sissy bar. If you get a rigid mount, relocation shouldn't be necessary. At least that was the case with my Standard. Consider how often you will remove the sissy bar. In my case, thats.... never. So I got the rigid mount. I did all the work myself. It saved a bunch of time and money. Relocating the turn signals is more involved and involves cutting and splicing the wires. Still not rocket science but more time consuming.

I didn't get a reach around, either. $241 worth of parts installed - all easy locations - and $234.57 in labor charges. About two hours work. $475.57 total!

"Oh what a feeling!"...no..wait..thats another brand.
