So I was about to take my Porker Jackknives off and go back to stock....have the stock system polished and ready to go.
Then I had a buddy tell me that loud pipes are safer. Then I did some research and found that there are conflicting views on this.
If its a matter of safely Ill happily keep my porkers on...
What do you guys think? Is a louder bike a safer bike? At all? I can wear ear plugs...and its not too bad....but I always preferred a quiet bike. So when my Heritage came with the Porkers I started searching for my stock system....
you will get alot of different opinions on this,,,,,
my opinion is that LOUD pipes are safer.....I see when a cager is driving...and they hear the pipes..I see them look in the mirrors more often then not to see where the sound is coming from!
i have the new fatboy lo the only thing i will do is put the slip on rush mufflers on gives your bike a nice sound and keeps the bike looking stock...i had them on my 2009 lowrider and they sound good not to lound.......
loud pipes aint gonna keep some dips%$t from turning or pulling out in front of you,but it might stop someone from changing lanes on you. they do make you more noticable and thats a good thing in my book.
With the way cars are being built now days and as loud as people listen to radios, I honestly do not think they are any safer. People say they are, great! Do not get me wrong I would rather have loud pipes then stock but safer... Its kind of like the whole drive your truck with the tail gate down and you will save gas...if that makes you fell better great but you are not doing a damn thing.
keep the louder pipes cuz they sound good when you light it up at the bar or for your own enjoyment but I would not count on them saving your life. You are better off keeping your head on 360.

IMO I do think they help. some people just hate bikes or so it seems, I've had people merge to my lane right next to me, I think they figure that you are small and will move out of the way. In parking areas it helps alot. There is no one thing we can do that will keep us safe from the cagers. Use your head. Old people are the worst
stock pipes don't sound good enough , straight or drag pipes (no mufflers) are too loud . find something in the middle that only gets loud when you rev the engine , and then don't do that while sitting at a stop sign
edit: oh yeah , if you need ear plugs .... your pipes are too loud !
This reminds of the song "Eat all the old people" - funny song. Nothing against old people (I'm going to be one pretty soon, too) but they are bad drivers as a group.
Get loud pipes if you like the sound - not necessarily for their effectiveness as cage deterrents.
