Anyone use this? My oil tank gets super hot and forget about stop and go traffic...my bike siezes up in 80 degrees or hotter in stop and go traffic. I understand the whole "air-cooled" thing but it gets embarrassing when I am seizing up and coughing in traffic. Do oil coolers really work?
An actual seperate oil cooler will help keep the temps down, but I don't think anything short of a fan blowing on the engine will help keep the engine cooler.
The slip on that you're looking at is neat looking and works to a degree but you have to be moving. I have a slip on like that one and it keeps my oil temps 15-20 degrees cooler than without but it doesn't help in traffic.
Oh...you can find these items for around $40 on EBay and they work just as well as the $100+ ones. Just depends on how much money you want to spend...
Probably be a good idea to change your oil to Synthetic if you already haven't. I know it' a pain, but when I'm in heavy traffic, i cut my engine off on stops.
Thanks. I usually cut my engine too I have some good points in the road where it is a pretty steady downhill shot. Throw her in neutral and glide away. Its on the up-slopes when I have to kick her back on and it is stop and go. That always causes the seizing and coughing. I have my 2500 mile service coming up. I am definitely telling them to put in synthetic...
I was talking to the mech who does the warrenty work on my bike about getting an oil cooler. His comment was that it's an air cooled engine and as long as there was air moving across it then the oil cooler should give you some additional cooling of the oil, but don't think it's going to work any better in stop and go traffic.
in stop and go traffic the cooler is worthless except for extra capacity. I believe you need to check out the heat heat sensor, they are about $20, yours might need replcaing. The temp goes to the heat management of the ECM and will shut down the bike.
I was at the dealer in annapolis a while back and they had an ad for an oil cooler that had fans on it but the ad said it was for the touring
bikes. Made sense to me, put temperature activated fans on the cooler, because who needs a cooler when they are moving? there were
2 of em mounted to the front of the cooler and they had a protective screen in front of them for road debris. Reminded me of the fan in \
my computer.
