Trans fluid level
Changed the primary on the 2007 Heritage. Everything ok got about a qt out. Pulled the drain plug for the transmission, removed the dipstick and only got out about 4 ounces. hmmmmmmmmmmm should be a qt right. I added a little 20/50 and it already shows on the dipstick. Am I getting all the trans fluid out? Is there a secret here?
the one you removed is kinda bad, it was the lower end.......be carefull starting it if it makes noise shut it down ...........should be ok thou my bud did the same thing on his dyna but no probs jus add 4 to 5 ozs back in the oil tank...........as far as tranny i use 80w 90 bel ray severe gear works great and quiet too.....plug is between the shocks as stated above....oh and put thread tape on the plug you removed
I have the service manual but the pic showing the trans plug does not show the shocks in the picture. The plug I pulled was directly below the engine under the flat casting on the right hand side. Very little oil came out, maybe a couple ounces. This plug did not have an o ring.
Thanks DyNaBob. I found the trans plug and that is all changed and in good order. I'll make sure to check the oil level closely, going to change it tomorrow night. It was so little it had to be just residual sitting in the bottom of the housing. I'll listen closely when I start it up.

yup you pulled the wrong one.......pull your oil fill plug add some oil and leave off when you start it.......it will help oil get back down ther faster...........the tranny plug is between the shocks drain and add 1 qt of oil back in.............
You say you changed the primary, pulled the plug for the tranny and filled some dipstick with 20-50?.
Wondering if you got your holes and oil right.
3 holes to fill. Primary, Tranny, Oil Tank. All separate.

Undoubtedly you pulled out the engine drain.
But that's not really a bad thing unless you screw up reinstalling it by cross threading it or stripping it. Then you got a BIG problem.
The Harley engine design uses a dry sump oil system so even if there is a little oil in the crankcase, your not supposed to take it out with that plug. Besides the amount of oil left in the engine and plumbing makes up such a small percentage of the total volume its impact on the overall life of the engine is negligible.
So unless your a die hard drag racer and flog hell out of it every time you start it up, going through all the trouble to get every drop out is way more trouble than its really worth.
Your supposed to run the engine to warm it up, so IT can suck the case dry with the scavenge side of the oil pump and get as much crap as possible up into the oil so when you drain it you get as much of the oil and crap out at the same time.
If I were in your boots I would just carefully check the plug to make sure its good and snug (not too tight or you'll strip it) and leave the silly thing alone from now on.
