Default Swapping Gastanks on EFI Models.

Okay, so I want to swap gastanks on my 09 Cross bones, wanna go with a new paintjob , but keep the stock paint. Have a Gastank off a 03 EFI softtail and was wondering if its a straight swap on all the fuel pump, etc
from one tank to the other. I know I'll need a new Gasket,Torx screws, and O rings for fuel lines. Hav'nt stripped the stock 09 Gastank as its still on the Bike at the moment, and do'nt want to take it apart yet. Has anybody done this or know anything about it? CHEERS

as for the 03 tank working, it will not work without some kind of modification, if that's
possible. H.D. changed the way you mount the fuel pump inside the tank, starting in 08.
You need a tank that has the fuel pump float bracket on the top of the hump inside the tank.
I found all this out the hard way changing tanks on a 07 softail.
You're best bet would be to look for a tank on ebay 08 or newer.
hope this helps

go to the dealer and take a look at the wiring diagram for the 03, if its the same, you could use an 03 fuel pump?

Thanks for the replies, Guys. 03softail Yea, figured as much. Was looking at a 09 softail manual and they mentioned brackets for the fuel pump, and I can't see any in the 03 TANK. My other plan is as you said xraybox, to check if wiring is the same for both years, then maybe I can use 03 Pump with 09 cover.Need to try and make the 03 tank work as I already did some work on it ,dished the sides, which was lots of fun, nothing like beating the crap out of a piece of metal, so I also may have some fitment issues with the pump, but hey if it was easy ,everyone would do it.

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE REPLIES.

Hey if you're willing to do that, then fabbing a mount in the 03 tank should be a piece of cake.
I believe dc4stroke did that here

Yup, it can be done. Get you a cheap dented tank to donate its bracketry. Mine just happened to be my original.

dc , thanks for that. My prob is not too many second hand tanks about over here. You remounted the brackets from ONE TANK TO ANOTHER ,right? As I said my tank is an 03, with no brackets at all in. Two holes bottom left. Think the fuel pump mounts using forward hole, gonna check this out tomorrow,(buddy with a manual) if so, I'm wondering if I can use my 09 cover/fuel gauge sender with the 03 pump. Depends on the wiring I suppose. We'll see. As I said before, if it was easy everyone would do it. Your Fatbones looks the biz ,by the way.

Man if you need any more ideas...........holler at me. I would've thought eBay would be a good source. After I investigated the cost of converting to the old fuel system or buying a new tank and having it painted......Yeah, I butchered my old dented tank to salvage the bracket.

After checking out the Manual for 03 model ,looks like it is as you say DC, its one or the other. Either I get a complete 03 system for the tank or modify it to fit the 09 System from my stock tank. Suppose should have checked this out ,before I started work on the Tank, but hey, you learn something new everyday. Will get there in the end.

Default I just did it..

I cant seem to find my thread with the pics to show what I did, but here's my story.
I have an 08 Night Train and my stock tank got damaged so I found another "EFI" tank on EBAY. Everyone selling a tank says EFI tank for sale. will fit 00-09.. This is not true. all EFI tanks are not created equal !!!

My tank was also still on the bike so there was no way of me knowing they were different. I also learned this the hard way. After sending the new tank to paint, I was ready to swap over all the internals when I realized that they were totally different inside.
The new tank have a bracket that holds everything to the hump in the middle of the tank where the older tanks, the pump and everything else is held by the lid that is held by the 10 torques scews. Alot of the parts including the gasket have the same part #'s. But the 08+ pumps will not bolt on.

After almost 2 weeks of breaking my head, I decided to do what one of the other guys had done, (I cant remeber if it was DC now)
Which was to remove the bracket off of my old tank and have it rewelded in place to the new tank I had bought.
After a few hours of carefully grinding both tanks. I was able to get the bracket and have it welded back in the new tank.

The way I did it was I grinded the old tank from the bottom to grind down the welds but not damaged the bracket. (Tank is destroyed with a huge hole)
The new tank was a bit more tricky because I had to be careful with the fresh paint. I grinded the bracket on the new tank from the inside where I had to physically grind down the bracket until the welds gave out.
I used a wet towel to keep the temperature down while grinding and also when I welded up the bracket to the new tank.

Tip : Using a scriber or anything sharp, mark where the bracket on the tank you are keeping is at so that its easier to place the bracket when its time to reweld. your going to want that to be exact as your floater also goes attached to the same bracket.

Let me know if you need any tips on what to do. It can be done just get yourself a wrecked donor tank and be patient.
